Matt Simon faces a lengthy ban for his poor tirade at the referee after receiving his marching orders against Brisbane.
The Central Coast Mariners’ skipper was sent off for a second bookable offence late in his team’s 5-3 loss and could be heard calling the referee a ‘f*cking dog’.
Speaking on Fox Sports’ Sunday Shootout, Ned Zelic said Simon’s behaviour was simply “not on” and he should be sanctioned for it.
“It’s going to be interesting what they actually do with this,” Zelic said. “I reckon he’s looking at at least four weeks for what he said.
“That’s where you really have to control yourself as a player. Irrespective of how things are going and they’ll be extremely frustrated and disappointed with this whole season, especially that night conceding a lot of goals.
“You really have to stay controlled and not allow yourself to lose discipline.”
Former Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson recalled an incident when he was sent off for swearing at the referee and received a two-week ban.
“I have actually sworn at the referee against Newcastle and I got sent off, a straight red, and I got two weeks,” Thompson said.
“I remember leaving the ground and being really disappointed because I let my team down.
Speaking about Simon, he said: “You want someone that’s calm and collected. Okay he’s going to have some grunt, but you’ve got to walk a fine line and he certainly walked over it.”
